It’s been a few weeks after getting my new phone so I guess it’s that time already to put out a review!

But before anything, do note that this is the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X, and should not be mistaken for the Mi 4, Redmi 4, Redmi 4X and the Redmi Note 4. I was confused too at first but yes, they’re all different phones.

What’s in the box? What you’d expect- the unit, manual, a sim pin, charger and a USB cable, all neatly tucked inside a compact minimalist box. Details of the unit can be seen on the bottom.

I also got a freebie from the seller I bought from in Lazada- an Onda 5000mAh power bank!

The 5.5″ clear and crispy Full HD IPS screen makes for a wonderful visual and ergonomic experience. The phone is also quite slim (8.5mm) compared to other phones in its price range. The fingerprint sensor is something new to me, but I agree it makes unlocking the phone more convenient. Add said features to a sturdy metal body, and it’ll have that expensive and premium feel. The only problem is just that: the metal rear is basically a super magnet to dust, oil and fingerprints so you’re gonna need to buy a phone case.

USAGE AND VERDICT

I’m a simple guy- as long as it does what I need it to do properly and efficiently, I’m good with it. Never been eager to get the latest and the most expensive anyway because (1) it’s a useless luxury for me, (2) I’d rather invest that amount of money and (3) let’s face it, I don’t really have 100k PHP to blow on a tiny piece of gadget only mostly used to text, call and surf the net. So yeah, this affordable phone fits the bill.

My old one, a Meizu M1 Note, is still actually quite alive and kicking. It’s just that it has a measly 16GB storage, 2 GB RAM and a buggy GPS. The camera is phenomenal though! So after about 3 years of usage, I thought it was already time for a cheap and minor upgrade.

That said, the upgrades I got with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X were worth it- 32GB storage means I could take more photos and videos for my blog without always having to immediately transfer them. The 3GB RAM prevents the phone from quickly lagging when multitasking, and the 2Ghz octa-core CPU (with its mid-tier GPU) makes for a fast and smooth experience on both daily tasks and games. The GPS registers fast and is on-point as well! The only downside is the camera- it’s still good, but inferior to my old camera’s phone. I guess we can’t have everything, but yeah, the trade-off still takes the cake!
