Joining the current international foodie scene in Lilac, Marikina, is Singlish Cafe! There’s already quite a number of American, Japanese, Mexican and Middle Eastern restos in the area (as my previous reviews show), but they’re first to actually offer Singaporean cuisine, be it with a dash of American dishes. Ready? Lets have at it!
Bummed out big time on a Saturday night, friend and Rancho IV resident James suggested we dine at Singlish Cafe for dinner. I know the location (man, it’s just beside Mogu Tree and Teaza!) but I didn’t really notice it before. Well, it’s probably they weren’t open yet the last time I visited the area lol.
Directions: Just head on to Lilac street in Marikina! A known and notable entry point is at Soliven street via Sumulong Hi-way, Antipolo. Antipolo’s Soliven interconnects to Marikina’s Lilac, by the way. Once in Lilac, you’ll see it on your left (assuming you came from Soliven) after the St. Paul church!
Parking space in front of the establishment is limited, but you can park elsewhere on the adjacent streets- no worries because it’s completely safe there. The interiors give off a good and relaxing vibe with its modern wooden texture concept and down lights. The place can accomodate 4-5 groups of four on the first floor. I wasn’t able to check their second floor, but for sure if there are more tables there.
Let’s get on with the food! Waiting time is average after ordering: about 10-15 mins. Better get some appetizers first if you don’t like waiting. Here are the pictures of what me, James and Joal ordered:
Overall verdict? The food is good, and it’s what you would expect of a pseudo-Singaporean food establishment. Still a must-visit if you’re in the area! The cons we noticed are (1) Mee Goreng, supposed to be spicy noodles, isn’t the least bit spicy and (2) the ratio of price vs. amount served isn’t something to look forward to as there are better options nearby. Note that these are only for the dishes we ordered. We tried ordering their famous Bak Ku Teh, but it wasn’t available at the time- you can try that next time and write about it in the comment section below! Also (3) no chili! Chili is a must for me when it comes to Asian cuisine but I guess it’s a personal preference so it isn’t that big a deal for others.
The only regret I had was that we were too focused on trying out their Singaporean dishes that we forgot about their American ones. Maybe next time? For now let’s just look at the photo of what is supposed to be their Bacon Mushroom Melt Burger priced at 228 PHP:
